Play-Doh Touch is an iOS/Android app that lets users scan their real‑world Play‑Doh creations and watch them spring to life in a whimsical digital playground. Players can also scan other creations to watch them come alive as decorations in the world as they explore a series of themed islands, each built around one of the base character shapes.
My role
I joined the project towards the end of the initial development cycle. I was a tools and gameplay programmer. Initially I was focusing on creating tools for the designers to use, but as the initial release was completed and we moved on to the content updates I shifted more towards gameplay development. I was responsible for both the design and implementation of many play elements through the worlds.
How it works
The app uses the device camera to generate a mesh of the scanned dough, then applies a preset rig so the figure can run, jump, and interact with the world. The same goes for the decorations, which populate the worlds as they are scanned.
The scanner also uses the outline of the shape scanned to detect whether or not the creation matches one of the pre-defined character stamper, in which case that specific character will be loaded instead.
Extras
Separate packs of “stampers” are sold as physical add‑ons. Each stamper contains a unique shape that, when scanned, unlocks a special character model and animation set.
